Mayor Emanuel Visited Chinese Class at Michell By Mary Ann Durso

We have good news to share!  In November, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel came to visit Mitchell Elementary School, a preK-8 Chicago Public School located in the West Town/ Ukrainian Village neighborhood.  Mitchell is ranked a Level 1+ school in Chicago Public Schools.

During his visit, Mayor Emanuel came to our Chinese World Language classroom where students were immersed in learning Chinese language and culture.  The mayor was thrilled when he saw the vast number of technological resources being used, the level of student engagement, and the rigor in our classroom.  During his visit, half of the 6th graders were using chrome books to work on their online Chinese language coursework which included speaking, reading, listening, writing, and culture.  Five students who had earned an A in their online coursework were using iPads and APPS to learn vocabulary, sentence structures, to play games, and to learn about Chinese culture as it pertained to our essential question- "What makes a home special?"   The other half of the class was engaged in small group work.  During small group work, students were using their Chinese language skills, props and technology to create videos about ordering food at a Chinese restaurant.  Next, the students were using flip grid to upload the videos they created to their online digital portfolios.

We are very pleased to have been able to host Chicago's Mayor, Rahm Emanuel in our Chinese World Language classroom.  To date, Mitchell School has written, received, and implemented over $30,000 in teacher, student and community grants for our Chinese World Language program which is in it's 8th year.  We look forward to sharing our work with others, and to the continued success of our students and the community in which they live, as they continue to learn Chinese language and culture.
